A Lap Of The Blogs

Posted by Preet on Jan 29, 2009 | 11 comments

If you are new to WhereDoesAllMyMoneyGo.com, every Friday I run a post called “A Lap Of The Blogs” which provides links to articles I found interesting and think that others may want to read for themselves. I also include some commentary on what’s going on in my personal life and a weekly “racing video” since my former life was in the auto-racing industry. The name “Lap of the Blogs” is in reference to “A Lap Of The Gods” which is an old video series which chronicled on-board footage of the world’s greatest F1 drivers lapping various racetracks from around the world. Wow, what a day today – out of the house at 7am and not back until 10:45pm...

Book Giveaway #4: RRSPs by Yours Truly

Posted by Preet on Jan 28, 2009 | 28 comments

Well, it’s time for round #4 of the book giveaways this week. I’d make it 5 books as I normally write on Fridays but that’s reserved for the weekly Lap of the Blogs and I’ve got a real deusie of a video (which “propeller heads” will enjoy too!). But I do have some good news. I noticed that Jonathan Chevreau linked here from his blog (WealthyBoomer.ca) and mentioned I was giving away four of HIS books, instead of the four different books I had planned. Well, since I don’t want to disappoint, I’m happy to add three more copies of Findependence Day to the contest so there will be four different books in the pot, but seven...

Book Giveaway #3: New Rules of Retirement by Warren MacKenzie and Ken Hawkins

Posted by Preet on Jan 27, 2009 | 23 comments

Today’s review and giveaway is on the book “New Rules of Retirement” by Warren MacKenzie and Ken Hawkins. There are a couple of very favourable reviews on the internet already from Canadian Capitalist and Four Pillars – please check out what they had to say. I can’t imagine adding more to the aforementioned reviews other than to say that I really appreciated the main message of the first half of the book in which they challenge a lot of widely held beliefs about retirement – guess the title was a good pick! :) Instead I’ll comment on the two authors since I’ve met them both. Warren MacKenzie is the founder and president of...

Book Giveaway #2: No Hype! The Straight Goods on Investing Your Money by Gail Bebee

Posted by Preet on Jan 26, 2009 | 23 comments

First I wanted to say a great big THANK YOU to all the comments on yesterday’s contest so far, you guys have come up with some really, really good questions. Today’s book giveaway will be for “No Hype! The Straight Goods on Investing Your Money” by Gail Bebee. Gail describes herself as a savvy financial industry outsider. Her knowledge about investing is self-taught after having once used an advisor. Overall I think this book deserves high praise simply because it covers off a lot of material without becoming intimidating – the book is quite slim, yet delivers quite a punch. My only caveat is that this book is a great starter’s manual...

Book Giveaway: Findependence Day by Jonathan Chevreau

Posted by Preet on Jan 25, 2009 | 51 comments

There are going to be four book giveaways this week, and I’m happy to kick things off by reviewing/giving away a copy of Findependence Day by Jonathan Chevreau, personal finance columnist with the National Post. This book is different from most personal finance books. Different in a good way. One thing that I’ve been struggling with has been the somewhat narrow scope I’ve taken with my writing on this blog. For the most part, I assume readers have a basic grasp of the fundamentals so I have often times written about some pretty technical aspects of finance that, quite frankly, 99% of the population couldn’t give a hoot about. (I’ve always...

The Latte Factor Re-Visited

Posted by Preet on Jan 21, 2009 | 6 comments

David Bach made headlines by basically going around and telling people how much richer they could be by demonstrating what he called the latte factor. It basically shows that if you cut out an expensive daily trip to Starbucks (latte and a muffin) you could take that $5 and put it into the market instead – and you would accelerate your retirment (or become an automatic millionaire). Take away my lattes? …from my dead cold hands! Here’s my solution (as alluded to recently): Nespresso Essenza Espresso Maker and Aeroccino Milk Frother: $299 CAD Less $100 credit for espresso pods: -$100 (special promotion) 2 Electrically Heated Travel mugs (Car adapter and...
