The Vanguard Industrial ETF, VIS has a 53% unrealized loss and a 9% realized loss as of 8/30/09. This means that over the next eight years is indeed unlikely to have a capital gains distribution.

I wouldn’t say that 75% of investors leaving a fund is highly unlikely – it may attract investors who are less interested in chasing performance (don’t tell that to anyone holding in emerging markets fund in the last few years) but the general idea could still lose popularity.

In fact, if a large number of investors did sell their shares and tax considerations were a big issue, there could be a run on the fund as everyone races to avoid being in the last 25% who are hit with capital gains :)

This seems as good a place as any (by which I mean there really is no good place) to mention that “the proof is in the pudding” makes no sense. The phrase is “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”.
